1984 190E 2.3 Cold Start/Idle issues.
I've been working on this 190 for about a month or so now. I've overcome the trans issues, and the oil pressure issues, but am having problems with cold starts and idling. I know that 4 seconds or so of cranking is normal but sometimes its over 10 seconds before it tries. When it warms up it seems to "surge" or hunt for idle speed. It is very rythmic and I can almost count and know when it is going to speed up.
Here's what I have done so far. Replaced breather lines, and cleaned out the metal "T" mounted to the intake manifold by the cold start injector. replace idle air control valve rubber hoses and barbed fittings checked all vacum lines etc. all filters replaced including fuel, air and so on. I did notice tonite that it seemed to clear up when i removed the gas cap. Tank did seem to almost have a "vacum" inside it, so I'm think'n it may be starving the fuel pump for fuel. Assuming it is not that, the next logical choice would be the fuel pressure regulator, as it almost seems to be related to the way the fuel pump is cycling. What is the correct pressure in the fuel system when the pump and regulator are working correctly? Again.. any ideas on this would be appreciated. I'm actually really enjoying this baby Benz!!! Rick W2ICA Update as of 1pm today... In looking at the injection/air mix unit I noticed the valve had a rather large fancy nut holding it fast to the arm. Just above it is a small rubber stopper. In thinking like the Germans, I had to wonder why they would spend the extra $$ for the rubber stopper, arm, and fancy nut. Then it hit me, it is supposed to stop the air valve from closing too far. When I started the car today.. it cranked and cranked and cranked and only when I depressed the throttle did it start. I pressed the rubber bumper down and set it to a point where the car idled normally. Have I "bypassed" the air valve on the intake manifold between three and four.. or am I correct in assuming the nut should rest on the rubber stopper? so far car has started within the first 3 seconds of cranking.
