Question Removing engine queston

When removing engine, 1992 300 TE wagon is it possible to leave a/c system connected and tie the compressor off to one side so it does not have to be serviced?

It's hard to get the engine out without pulling the AC condensor. You thought is good on the compressor though. If you think you can get the lump up and over the condensor then go for it.

Gilly,

I did remove the radiator and plan to put a 1/4" board over the condensor to protect it while removing. I've also removed the fan. There seem to be plenty of remove to lift it out but really not sure. I hope I can figure some way to move the compressor out of the way. I can do all the a/c servicing but really hope it will not be necessary.

Thanks, Ron

Ron, that'll work, if you think it'll clear the condensor. Will probably need a heck of an angle to get it out, including raising the car so the tailshaft will clear the ground. The compressor you can just lower and wire to something sturdy so you don't stress the AC hoses too much.

My indie was able to do this on one of my 123 cars but I cannot remember which model it was. With the cost of freon and all it is well worth the effort ...

yes. eliminates the need to angle the sob so sharp that the trans drags on the ground.

just pull the motor and support the trans with a floor jack or something REALLY STEADY. don't want it falling down after the engine is out. make sure to unbolt the torque convertor first, otherwise you'll have a real mess on your hands. good luck, cjhuck.

If I take the engine and transmission out as a unit can I still unbolt the torque converter and lift the unit out with the bolts from the bell housing still holding the two parts together?

yes. that will work if you are pulling both. i thought we were talking about motor only, though. it's alot easier if you leave the trans. good luck, chuck.

Yes we were. But I've really not decided whether to take out as a unit or separately. I need to take a motor and trans out of another of my cars and use either motor or motor and transmission in the one I'm working on now. Both cars are 1992 300, one and E and one a TE.

You can

I pulled the engine out of my W124 E300 this summer. Pulled engine and transmission together and it came out nice and left the AC Compressor in there and out of the way. We left the condensor in also, with a thin piece of plywood to protect it. It is a tight fit but will go. Just takes a little time to turn it a little and get it aimed just right. I did have the front end up on ramps and have a quality engine hoist with the crank adjustable balance bar tied to the engine in two places. I think it is much easier to pull engine and transmission and seperate them and put them together on the bench or shop floor. Of course, I am pretty old and really hate spending a minute more under the car then necessary. Probably never would have got it done except that Bajaman is 50 years younger then me. Bajaman is one fantastic mechanic and thinker. Thanks again man.

Cut the top of the radiator support out with a sawzall. You can flip the condensor to one side and leave the compressor in the car. Makes it a whole lot easier.
Weld the support back in after the job is done.

On this car I decided it would be easier with me working alone to take out the transmission separtely from the motor. I've got the transmission out and the engine should be easy for one person.

I do think I will pull the engine and trans from the other car as a unit and then install them in the car I just took the trans out of as a unit.

Well engine and transmission are out.

I now have my other 1992, a 300 E, in the garage and will remove motor and transmission as a unit, hopefully, and then put them in the 1992 300 TE pictured in photo below.
