85 300D won't start afterr rebuild--injection timing--180 degrees off ?

My 85 5 cylinder 300D is finished post engine overhaul, new head, timing chain. I put the pump back in and timed it, but the car won't start. Last time I rebuilt my 240D the engine turned over on first start.
On my 85 5 cylinder injection pump--I shoved it back in with notches matched and 24 ATDC--but I didn't check for Rabbit Years on the Cam, both lobes up. Since Crank turns 2x for Cam 1x, is it possible I am 180 degrees off? Do I have to remove pump and reset it? I sthis possible? respectfully RC

Yes, it is possible for the pump to be 180 out -- you have to line up the notch on the pump shaft to the opposite corner on some pumps. You may also have set the injection pump on the exhaust stroke, too -- check injection timing and look at the cam lobes. I'll never start if you inject 180 out. It should puff white smoke, though.

Did you set the timing with the drip tube? If not, you need to.

Of couse, this is MUCH easier on the engine stand before you put the motor back in........

It may take a while to get the engine started, too. If you don't have white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, I wouldn't rule out needing to crank longer.

Did you bleed the pump competely? Do you have good fuel delivery from the feed pump? I ask, because it took three battery charges and two batteries to get my brother's 300D started after rebuilding the motor.

It may be true that it's 180 degrees off. You can retime the camshaft if you're careful. First position the crankshaft at 45 degrees before TDC and remove the chain tentioner and the cam sprocket. Rotate the cam 180 degrees to 45 degrees before TDC and then replace the chain and tentioner. Turn the crank to TDC and check the cam timing.

I would bring the engine to TDC, remove the rocker arms (5 bolts), turn the cam 180, reassemble, and try it out. There is no way to tell where the pump is unless you can see through the lock up hole.

I would just turn it and try.
