You can check my earlier thread concerning my 260e auxiliary fans.

I had two brand new erzatz thermostats. Both were no good. Low operating temps and very high overtemps.

The Behr unit fixed this problem.

Arthur gives excellent advice here.

The two etrzatz models didn't fit exactly in the housing and the supplied gaskets were wrong. Wrong circulation.

So I first changed the T-Stat with a Behr unit and that raised the temp on the gauge to between 65-70* when idling...

Not right, so I went to the dealer and got the water temp sending unit. That fixed it...

Yup Thank you!

It now seems to hover closer to 98* though when it's all stop and go.. yikes

From what I remember from my E420 however, it was normal. I did install the aux. fan resistor trick to trigger the aux. fans earlier... I might do that to this one.

Many guys just put a toggle sw in the cabin and hook the 2 wires across the low fan sensor at the a/c drier...that gives the operator a manual over-ride and allows for aux fan anytime you want it.... nice to have if you are towing or doing lots over heat generating driving...the niceity of this is it is cheap to do and when not being used , the stock system goes right back to factory normal.
I have had fan toggles on all my Benzs for years and though seldom used , there always seem to come that one day when you are glad it's there..........

We all know the "Turn the heater ON " trick when a car is over-heating...

That is what an aux fan does ...it is strictly there to check High Termal Load conditions caused by anything that is Taxing the systems...both a/c pressures or coolant temps..
A cabin sw addresses BOTH.

Does anybody know if the water temperature sender is supposed to have a washer between it and the engine block/manifold?

Mine did not have it and when I bought the new sensor, it didn't come with one either so I just took the old one and plugged the new one in.

Thanks,
