Thermo Time Switch on a 190E

I am having issues with a 190E idling when cold.

I suspect the Thermo time switch but have no idea how to check the switch. It seems to have NO changes either hot or cold. Does anyone know how the unit should read? One leg to ground shows about 90 ohms, the other near open. These readings do not change hot or cold. Does this unit control fast or cold idle? Thanks

Rick

there is no thermal timer on your car. that's an old term for the switch used to fire the cold start injector on the early k-jet cars. timer because it would only allow 10-50 seconds of injector before the thermal side heated up and shut off the voltage to the injector. i assume you mean coolant temp switch, off which there are 3. engine temp, cooling fan on/off and injection. be nice to know where on the motor the switch your are testing is located. good luck, chuck.

Thanks Chuck.. The year of the car is an '84. It is the forward most sensor on the head, with the double wire connector going to it. The next one back I believe tells the computer where the engine's temp is to adjust fuel mixture, as when I pull that single wire off the engine runs rough, slows down but blows black smoke, like a rich mix. The last one back I think is the aux fan control. ******** AZ lists the switch as the thermo time switch, and has a hefty price of 103.00.

Dieselnutnj;
How describing the cold start problem? There was a cold start problem inherent to that year/car/engine combo!
The wire you pull off that makes black smoke is the one we'll deal with today. Acquire a 2.5k ohm 1/4 watt resistor, modify the connector so that the resistor is soldered inline with the harness to the coolant temp sensor.
