Brake issue '90 300E

Sitting at a stop light with my foot on the brake, I can sometimes feel the pedal go just a little soft and shudder a bit (like the antiloc brakes are activating) and the car moves forward 8" or so, then the pedal returns to normal and it stops. ABS light does not come on or flash. It does not do this only when cold or only when hot, and it only does it occasionally, not all the time.

Brakes seem perfectly normal other than this. Brake pads and sensors are relatively new, done a few months ago, new rotors as well.

Anyone have this happen to them before? Any ideas what is causing it ?

My '93 has always done that since purchase (at 72K miles). But it only happens when I first back down my inclined driveway in the mornings. Because of the vehicle momentum from the incline, I also get a "clunk" when it occurs.

I have been curious as to why this happens, so I monitored this issue to see if it would worsen. It's been eleven years and counting, and no difference.

Same problem here as the OP but, I think its from bad ball joints (or struts?) on my 300E. Could be causing something rub against the brakes? I'm jacking the car and checking suspension tomorrow. I'll try to follow up my post as soon as I can figure out whats going on.

My 1988 300E did the same thing. My car too did the brake shudder at very random times. Hot or cold made no difference. Never at high speed, only very low speed or sitting still. I removed the sensors from the dust shields and cleaned them, they had alot of metal dust stuck to them. I also removed the hubs and cleaned them very well where the sensors read. Hasnt done anything strange yet. You may as well pack those front wheel bearings while your in there.
Good lick, hope this helps

my 93 300E 2.8 has never had this issue. My guess would be up in the wheel bearing and/or steering almost. thats just a guess. My ? is, dose it have a little wabble in the front end at lower speeds?

No, no wobble or anything, just the symptom I described in the original post. That's it.

i think he nailed it here, just a little vague ~~~ clean your ABS sensors and your ABS pick up wheels on the front hubs

sometimes the front ABS sensors don't like to come out easily, if they are stuck, use some brake cleaner on the end where they protrude on the back of the backing plate since the hubs are off to clean the sensor wheels

Wow, I need to try that... sometimes my ABS will "activate" at less than 5 mph when I am coming to a stop.
