U-joint replacement
I need to replace the u-joint on my 87 300E. I've done a lot of research and I'm just not sure where to turn. I've thought about going with a used drive shaft. But I am concerned about whether it will still be balanced. I assume the drive shaft is balanced as a set. If it's split apart I assume it must go back together in the same position. Is the drive shaft marked in some fashion?
The other option is to purchase a rebuilt unit. I've see several shops selling rebuilt units. Any advice on where to purchase? Thanks!! Jim |

A lot depends on WHERE you live.
Many good drive shaft re-builders use a replaceable style u-joint.

Jim, yes the shafts are clearly marked for proper assembly to each other.
Now, if you used the front half of yours, and another back half, I don't know if the two would maintain proper balance even if the respective factory marks were aligned (probably not). But, if you buy a rebuilt unit, they will provide both halves, properly balanced and marked for mating. Do a search herein, several shops recommended. As Doc said, some use greasable joints, some don't. But greasing is a really big job when you have to remove the exhaust to get to the joint. But I bet any of the rebuilts, even totally neglected, would outlast the rest of the car at this point. DG |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. I'm located in Madison, WI. I see some firms in CA, WA and TX. Are aware of anyone more in the Midwest that rebuilds MB drivelines? Also do you know where the marking are for aligning the two drive shafts?

If you are able to do the replacement yourself, mark each section with a punch or spray paint, remove the driveshaft and do the U0Joint. You might think about new flex discs, center bearing and mount.
