2000 C230 Shifter hard to move

The shifter in my 2000 C230 has become more difficult to move from Park into any other position. It seems as though there is much more pressure on it than I was used to. This may have been a gradual change but it is much harder to move from gear to gear now. I see four screws holding the shift assembly on to the top of the transmission is it that simple to remove or am I going to regret removing it that way? Anyone with a little knowledge of how this works that can explain it to me?

Take a look at your shifter bushing under the car. Connects linkage to shifter.

+1 on the bushings and you better hope that's it, as the 2000 and up the shifters are "modules" and I don't think there is anything replaceable in there. Of course ingenuity might find a cure, for example removing it and seeing if you can find a place to lube it.
