wiper arms
 

i am trying to put the wiper arms back on a 240d 74
and i cant figure out how to do it, the manual says something like push in on the spring and i have tried it, and must be doing something wrong
it appears there are bolts to attach at the top of the shaft which is inside the wiper arm

i feel stupid, but havent figured it out

It has been awhile since I have done this, but I recall that these just snap back on over the shaft and then the nut is bolted down over the shaft to hold the wiper arm on.

The "spring" it is talking about is like a a piece of spring steel that pushes up against the shaft. It has a curved part on it that fits the curve of the shaft.

Try just putting the hole in the wiper arm over the shaft and pushing down.

how do i get the bolt on then, would i try to pry the sheet metal part up with a screw driver, i dont want to damage it, actually i dont see how i can get the bolt over the top of the shaft and the arm on the shaft
it will just sit on the shaft and there are grooves on the shaft and inside the wiper arm, altho i assume it would come back off under any use or duress

I am just going by memory, but I think there is a hinged "cover" at the base of the arm that you are looking at. Read these instructions and see if they make sense.

To replace the arm: lift up the cover over the are shaft hole and place the shaft hole over the shaft sticking out from the body of the car.

Push down on arm until it bottoms out on shaft. This is not hard and should not require much pressure.

Place the spring washer (a thin washer that has a slight curve in it so it puts tension on the nut) and the nut on the shaft and tighten down the nut. I think this is a 13mm.

Snap the cover at the end of the arm down over the part of the arm that is bolted to the shaft.


Take a look at your arm. If the shaft hole is there but appears to have the cover over it then you can take a phillips screwdriver and sort of hold the hole in place while you pull back on the cover. The cover should fit tight, but not that tight.

Let me know what you see. I do not have a 114 here to look at.

i dont have a spring washer,
but i think your right, as to how to get it done, its dark out right now, so i sprayed some oil on the "cover" part of the wiper, and will try it tomorrow

You can pick these up at Lowes or Home Depot. Look for stainless ones if possible
