When I bought my 95 SL320 it only had one key/remote. Where can I get another key ?

Just give the dealer your vin number and they can get you a key

stealership unfortunately. if you want a laugh, go to a key cutting place and tell them you want 5 copies of a key today, then show the key.

If it's only a matter of copying one of the keys that has the four cuts, two on either side of each blade, you might be surprised at what some shops can cut.

Admittedly it won't be in steel like the OEM, but if you want to have a spare just in case something happens while you're waiting for the dealer to cough up the replacement...

I have purchased one spare for each of my cars, costs $25, if I remember correctly.

I know that won't do much good for you in NJ, but you may well find a solution among the lock shops in your area, especially if you can find a good sized one, rather than the little kiosk in a hardware store!

My local locksmith quoted $50 per key to copy my w124 keys - he also pointed out that the ignition key I had was brass, and the cylinder was a cheapie.

He recommended getting a new cylinder and an additional key from a dealer, instead of having him make duplicates. Turn around time on the order was two days. Total cost was $110 + tax.

[And a real oddity, checking the car's service history showed one outstanding recall [a bushing for the throttle linkage]. I will probably have that done next week]

EDIT:

All keys are now listed as a security item.
Only the dealer can get VIN# matched keys and fobs.
All dealers require the owner to appear with (call them for a list) legal documentation proving current ownership, BEFORE the key can be ordered.

On older cars you can purchase what are called undefined (random generated) generic ignition key and tumbler sets.

One good reason to get them from the Dealer is that cheap copies could possibly damage the tumblers in the lock or even break off in there.


It's an example of false economy to take that kind of chance, IMO

remote key and blade
 

There are the ebay remotes for sale, however i've been told that you then need to go to the MB dealership to have them reprogrammed. There is no guarantee that the remotes will work or be able to be reprogrammed. Also, the ebay remotes usually come with a new blade which needs to be cut. I have yet to find a locksmith that has the capabilities to be able to cut this key. Any tips?

The MB dealership wants way too much $250+ for a replacement remote, of which they will charge another $80 to have it programmed (no remotes from MB do not come programmed). MB also claims that once the replacement key is activated, one of the original keys must be deactivated. There can only be 2 keys activated / vehicle? is this true? Also MB dealership claims that they do not have capability to cut a new blade either.
