Alternator not working but no battery light on

Hello

The car is W124 1988 260E Euro

I had my Alternator not working and had to change it.

I found that the wire connecting the rotor to the collector completely blown up on both ends, then no charging at all but no battery light came on execpt the ABS light on intermittently.

Does any body have any explanation?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what you mean by rotor and collector.

The warning light needs to come on when you turn the ignition to run. If it does not, then the alternator will not work when the engine starts. Suggest that you check the bulb and the blue wire running to it from the alternator.

thank you,

Sorry my english terminology is not complete and good.

By rotor I mean the turning part of the alternator, and the collector the two copper rings that are attached to it where the brushes collect the current.

The lights comes up when turning the ignition key. then stays off.
I used to know ( on other cars) that when charging is not correct a light comes up to indicate that default

Hmmm, my '91 300SE did just the same thing; alternator went out and drained the battery, no light. Yet it lights up each time I crank the car.

I'm sorry, I mis-read your question. You are saying that you replaced your alternator and found that the old one had a burned wire, and that the ABS light came on. I don't know why the wire would burn.

But it is common for alternators to fail and not get a warning light. As long as the alternator does not supply ground to the light, the light stays off. This can happen even when the alternator is not supplying enough output to charge the battery. I have had two alternators fail this way. The ABS light will come on if the relay that powers the ABS determines that there is not enough voltage for the system to function. This is exactly what happened on my 1984 280SL. First the ABS light came on, then the radio cut out, then the engine died. No battery light at all!

Hope your new alternator fixed your problem!

In my experience, the first clue that you have an alternator problem is that everything goes dead. That idiot light does not seem to work light on other cars I have known.

Thank you to all,

effectively I had that sequence : the radio went off several times then ABS light during the travel I made when the alternator went off and the day after the battery was empty and engine stopped on the road.
