thanks for your help Rich. I tested the possibility of the NSS and eliminated that as the source. This morning, I turned the key to start and again heard the same loud click from the starter(actually the solenoid). Then as expected, I put a meter on and saw that I have a short and am now only getting 9 volts with the key in position 2. and once again the headlights dim when I try to start the car (click or no click from the solenoid) I again disconnected the ground to the starter and the short disappears when I turn the key to position 2. I also jumped the solenoid terminal with the starter pos terminal at your suggestion and only got a click the first few times and then no noise at all from the solenoid. Nothing like the engine trying to crank. I think the starter is causing the short and needs to be replaced.

After reading this thread, I just have to ask "Are you sure the engine will turn?" Sounds exactly like the engine is locked up which will cause all these strange electrical problems.
