Are you sure its the fan and not the alternator bearing?

Hmmm, I have to listen more closely.

Your engine has probably shifted and the fan is hitting the shroud or someone has leaned on it . There is a small amount of adjustment if you loosen the two bolts on the side of the shroud

Or failed engine mounts

Not sure if this is related

My fan has now connected with the shroud and wedged itself into the radiator - yes the radiator was gouged and needed to be replaced. After searching on other boards a suggestion was made to replace motor mounts (they were shot). However replacement of the mounts didn't resolve my problem. When the mechanic took the car out for a test drive the same thing happened, fan slashed the radiator (passenger side at 3 o'clock). I have not bottomed out on a driveway shifting the radiator forward. I'm wondering if there is play in the fan clutch allowing it to move forward enough to catch the shroud/radiator?

Anyone else have this problem?
1996 E300 (W210) with 223K miles.

This is the 3rd radiator, about to be the 4th! My 190E had 1 radiator for 312K miles.
thanks in advance
