Question Lights

Hi just a quick question, I have a 1985 190E, aren't the fog lights supposed to come on independent of the headlights? If you turn the Park/turn signal lights only to the on position and then pull the light switch out that should turn on only the fogs and not the headlights, correct? My lights don't work that way. It is either all of the lights are on or none are on. Everything works correctly except for that feature. Can anyone explain what is wrong or if this is the way it should be and a possible way to address and correct. Thank you.

Not sure about specifically the 190, but I can tell you that the bimmers of that era were designed so that the fog lights can only come on when the low beams are on due to US regulations.

my 1992 300CE can turn onn the fogs when parking lights are on.

Either it was not this way on your car, or something has been rewired improperly.

On my '88 300E, if you turn the dial one click to the right for the parking lights, the fog lights will not activate if you pull the switch out. However, if you turn the dial two clicks to the right to turn on the headlamps and pull the dial out, the fogs will come on. Now, if you turn the dial back one click to just the parking lights, my fog lights will stay on! Have you tried that yet?

lights

Hello and thanks for the information. I recently had new headlights with PIAA superwhite bulbs put in. I am wondering if the guy might have installed the wires incorrectly. Is that a possibility? Everything works except for the ability to put the fogs on without the headlights. Any ideas appreciated. Thank you!

Have you check the relay on the PIAA foglights? The relay is most likely tapped into the low beam wire. That's why the foglights only work when the low beam is on. If you want to have just the foglights on, you can use the parking light wire to power the relay. This will allow you to have parking lights and foglights on.

Good Luck

Hi thanks for the info. I will check tomorrow and see if the lights are hooked up incorrectly.
