2002 E320 shifter

I just replaced a faulty shifter in an 2002 E320 with a new one. The shifter won't shift out of park now. How do i sync the shifter with the main computer...or rather, how do i get it to function normally?
Also, if a diganostic computer is required to do this...does mbshop.com offer that in the too rental section??
HELP!

The have to have the signal from the brake light switch.

The shifter will have to be unlocked and sync'ed with the vehicle. Either mercedes SDS computer or an aftermarket version that can do this. Call the dealer and see if they will do it on roadside or and independent that would have the proper equipment.

The 2002 W210 cars do not need any coding for the shifter (ESM).

Go back to the post about the brake lights & make sure that they are working properly!

so would I simply have to replace the part bought from the dealer ?

Might want to check the shift lock module and the NSS

NSS is the old term for cars of today are calling the transmission range recogniton switch. The shift lock out module is part of the electronic selector module which is built in the selector which has a ignition lock control cable and selector level postion plug which communicates to the pcm.

Does this apply to the 2000 W210 cars as well?

Thanks,

Well FYI I replaced the shifter in my 2000 E320 and it just worked. No electronic "blessing" needed.
