Need help asap tension pulley

I just replaced the idle pulley and that was a breeze.

The problem I have now is that the tension pulley is has gone bad I think.

I'm able to move it left to right very easy with my hands. Does this mean that it's gone or can it be adjusted or fixed?

If I need to buy a new or used can someone recommend a person or company that’s selling it?

Hi,

Those parts are available on this site from the All Parts Express link. This should be the one:

http://www.allpartsexpress.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1998-MERCEDES--BENZ-C--80--/--V6--799cc--.8l--Gas--Fi-Engine&yearid=1998%40%401998&makeid=MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&engineid=1316353%40%40C2 80++%2F+V6%2D2799cc+2%2E8L+GAS+FI%40%40C280&catid=Engine%40%40Engine&subcatid=Belt+Tensioner@@Belt+T ensioner&mode=PA

There are 2 parts involved. There is the tensioner assembly and there is the pulley. I am not sure what you mean but you need to see where the looseness is. That link above is for the whole assembly. They have a nice photo you can zoom in. You can also buy just the pulley part for about 20.00.

cool thanks for that last post. i'll try my best to explain my problem. if you can tell me how to determine a bad tension pulley that may help. i first notice this problem with noise under the hood. once i popped the hood and inspected i saw idle pulley broken since then i have replaced that part.

further inspection and reading several posts on this site. i come to learn about the tension pulley. after repairing the idle pulley all the belts are very loose. i found the tension pulley and it's bolted on but can move freely left to right loosening the belt. if i grab the tension pulley and push it to the right it will tighten the belts but once i release the tension pulley it move to the left causing the belt to loosen up.

Does this mean that the i need a new tensioner assembly or is there a way to tighten it so the belts are tight.

Well I have the 4 cyl not the 6 so I am not sure, but I think there is supposed to be a spring in there. I don't know how common it is for that to break. Hopefully someone who knows will let us know.

Is there a link or anyone out there that can tell me how the the tensioner pulley works?

Yes, there are several links. All you have to do is use the magic power of search. Search on "C280 tensioner".

Hey thanks for the help. But I don't want you or anyone to thing that I not familar with that. I have tried the advance search and there are things on tensioner but not related to my problem.

the problem began with all my belts being loose to the point that i can slip them off with ease. i guess to rephrase the question, " to tighten my belt what do i do" cause i haven't found any information on this. the best info i have come across is having to do with the tensioner assembly. and when i go back to the car i'm able to move the pulley from left to the right. if i hold it to the right it tightens my belts. is there a way to tighten the assembly or does this mean i need a whole new assembly. ANYBODY

This thread has an explanation of the tensioner

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/71237-oil-leak-tensioner-release-99-c280.html?highlight=c280+tensioner

Your engine is a 112 so you might also search on 112 tensioner. 112 was in 98-00 C280
