Water entering passenger floorboard (pic) help!
 

I pulled up the carpet on front passenger side of my 300E yesterday by chance, to find a pool of water under the floor carpeting, mostly soaked up by the "sponge" under the carpet.

I checked under car in that area and couldn't find a missing grommet that would allow water in from outside.

Anyone know the possible cause here? Is there a drain hose, or AC line that runs past this area? All I could see were various wiring that luckily are wrapped in waterproof taping, however there's a switch down there that is corroded and ruined. (think its stereo related)

With the hood up (way up)....Check the drains off of the windshield mouldings for plugging with leaves or mud, etc. This might allow water to stand where it should be drained.....and allow it to seep through a firewall grommet, making it into the pass side floor.
Remove any debris you find in this area and blast it with a hose nozzle to clear the blockage & insure drainage of the entire area near the battery.

You may also have leaks from the windshield gasket or the AC condensate drain tube.

My W123 has a plastic shield located in the rear area of the front fender to prevent water picked up by the tire from entering the area where the front fender connects to the firewall and driver/passenger compartment - perhaps your car has a similar shield that is loose or missing?

Hi,

I did an evap on a 300e(124 chassis),well about a month later it came back for a check engine light,pull up the padding and it was wet,turned out the evap drain slipped off.Check the evap drain,pull back the carpet next to the trans tunnel and check to make sure the foam tubes are attatched to th eheater case and are inserted into the holes in the floor pan(trans tunnel).

Well, I'm also getting the "check engine" light when I stop at stoplights; then it disappears when I get up to speed. So apparently the tube has come loose as Mike mentioned.

Could you please describe in more detail where these foam tubes are, Mike?

Are they under that black foam padding to the left of the transmission tunnel?

They are under the center console. To the left and right side of the radio (to give you an idea). The console has to come out to replace them correctly. Don't use the same material again. I went to home depot and got a something similar, better and a lot cheaper.

Hi,

I will use your pic to help you along,as you are looking at the picture,the carpet next to the transmission tunnel(where the black plastic footwell vent is),can be removed,a phillips screw and slowly pull away from the fire wall enough to see the heater case.

Once the heater case is visible,look on the sides where the case rests on the trans tunnel and you will see a foam black tube,that is you drain for the evap.Make sure it is attatched and going through the opening in the floor,if disconnected or falling apart do as the other gentlemen stated and replace them.

The check engine light was because the water corroded the socket on the o2 sensor,causing the check engine light.That was my experience,may be totally different for you.

The other test you could do,being that the carpet is out already,is to let a garden hose run along the cowl area and see if you have water entering the pass. compartment when you pass it around the windshield or cowl.
