 Steve, are those wires
connected to the control unit?

There ya go Steve! (It's the least I could do for everything you've done for me and everyone else.)

Instructions: You must put [img.] before the web address/link.
And then you must put [/img.] after the web address.
NOTE: Ignore the periods (.) between the brackets; I only put those there so it wouldn't try and show an image. See how easy it is now?

 :D

Thanks, David.

I will keep the instructions. Now all I have to do is get my brother to show me how to put images to our website as he did with this image.

Amazing...

I can't believe wire insulation can get that bad!
Where does this this wire harness run? On top of the exhaust manifold?

stevebfl 09-24-2001 07:57 PM

This section of harness is about four inches from the AMM (air mass meter) in the center of the intake manifold. There was absolutely no indication from the outside. There are two outer layers, one almost a fiberglass like material and the other some of the toughest rubber I have ever seen. I had to use the sizzors to try and get inside without knocking all the insulation off.

Notice the darker, semi-green copper strands at the left and the brighter copper in the center. The brighter were uncovered in the disection process whereas the darker undoubtably had been that way.

Can you believe that this car had only irregular surging idle on first starting and mostly drove fine.

engatwork 09-24-2001 08:00 PM

WOW - the condition of the insulation is hard to believe - especially considering it is not really that old. Is this confined only to the engine compartment where they get cooked?

JimF 09-24-2001 08:01 PM

. . that's been cooked, mostly well-done!

Saw something similar on a S420 engine with about 100K miles.

The interesting part was that the car ran ok, before the harness was disturbed! It wasn't in quite as bad shape as this.

Moral, let sleeping dogs lie! :)

What car did that harness come off of?

My service records indicate that the harness on my 300E had been replaced FOC, but I have an occasional surging idle that I haven't been able to attribute to vacuum leaks or failed components...

stevebfl 09-25-2001 10:54 AM

The harness is off of a 1995 E420.

Michael 09-25-2001 10:57 AM

WOW!!!

What a mess! Thanks Steve for posting the picture:)

Ali Al-Chalabi 09-25-2001 10:58 AM

So I see that you got the new harness in that car.

Is the replacement harness an updated, better quality one, or is it the same one?

stevebfl 09-25-2001 06:10 PM

I think the problem was an accident and it has been corrected in all later cars and all replacement harnesses (I hope).

What years and models are affected by this situation?
