Intsrument illumination

My instrument lighting on the 300 is not as bright as it used to be. I'm under the impression that the light level is controlled automatically. Is there any adjustment that can be made or does a part have to be replaced? If so what and where is it? Also, is it possible that the alternator can produce 13.5 volts and still cause problems?

Cap'n,

There is a dimmer knob on the 300e. It is the same knob that is used to reset the odometer. Instead of pushing it in, just turn it to adjust the brightness.

You may need to replace the bulbs. I had to do this on my 1988 300e. The wife complained that it was not bright enough for her. The adjustment knob was turned on full.

Pulled the instrument panel and replaced all of the bulbs in it, about 4 or 5 if I remember correctly. Now all is fine.

Hope this helps.

I turned the switch and WALLA!! Back to bright! Thanks a million. I would have never thought to do that (although that is kind of an odd combination of functions). That's the great thing about this forum, we can all share and learn!:D
