I just use regular water in the SDL. It never freezes in that car and cleans well enough.
I have added a bit of simple green to the washer fluid if I'm gonna be out on the interstate. Around my way, a washer will freeze if some sort of anti-freeeze is not used.
You know, the heating coil has a thermostst built into it so it does not get too hot to boil off anything. When the thermostst goes bad, your washer fluid is constanatly heated to the same temprerature as your coolant - ie - 180f to above boiling.
Change your coil thermostat. You have to remove it from the bottle to do so. |

The blue stuff works well.

that's the MSDS for the stuff. It has a flash point of 93.2. I assume that's Celsius, since if it were Fahrenheit it would practically self ignite. That's still a frighteningly low temperature. If you ask me, that's just dangerous stuff to have sitting in a plastic bottle under your hood, behind your firewall, with a heating element. BTW - thanks for the info on the washer thermostat. Better check that.... -tp |

Don't forget that Ethylene Glycol is also flammable, in your radiator and expansion tank. And that oil, gasoline in a plastic filter and rubber lines, it's all under control.
It is all controlled chaos.
I like the rainx/ deicer for the morning frost and occasional ice. That stuff works great, never had a problem in any of my cars or trucks. |
Here in TX I just use distilled water - 58 cents at the grocery store. Won't leave spots and won't remove my Zymol Vintage like the other stuff. But up north, where I'm from, we used the blue stuff all the time. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Not just rainx almost all washer fluid is flammable the key ingredient in washer fluid is methanol a highly flammable substance all you have to do is dilute it a little more by adding water
I use the orange stuff by prestone,it has to be really cold to freeze it.
Been using RainX for years in all my cars including the E300D and 300SD. Never have had a problem and love how the rain runs up the windshield on the highway.
Flash point temperature is not the same as Ignition point temperature.
The blue stuff and Popov. Works fine. Doesn't freeze in my climate. And it's fun to watch the faces of teens and the homeless as you pour a bottle of vodka into a car. Cheap too.
