Instrument Cluster Repair Shops

I'm interested in having my speedometer and odometer repaired. I found a few places online and in these forums. Can anyone offer any recommendations on any of these?

They seem to vary quite a bit in cost.

It's a 1991 560sel. The rest of the cluster is ok. Both the speedometer and odometer have stopped. I had it in the shop and asked them to test the voltage at the back of the cluster and they said it appears ok so the problem is in the unit.

I only just started watching ebay and haven't seen the right one yet.

Some of these places charge about $165. for just a speedo/odo repair.

Replacements I've seen run $350 or more.

I've sent lots of stuff to paspeedo. Always got everything back fixed, on time, and for the right price.

instrument cluster

I just had mine repaired by The Benz Store in Chamblee, GA. Did a great job. Price = $95 (Including shipping) to fix odometer. Mailed it back in less than a week.
Here is Ph #: 800.631.4170
attn: Ken.

Good luck.

What did they charge for a speedometer/odometer repair? I looked at their site, but didn't see any indication of pricing.

Check the boneyards. I got a W126 speedometer with working odometer and outside temp display for 20 dollars.

Dee8go 12-02-2008 02:43 PM

How can you be sure it works when you find it in a junk yard?

You can't really, but a good indication that it works is the trip odometer will not be set to zero as most of them are. I purchased three of them, but since they all were apart of my experiments I didn't mind. The first one I bought worked for a day and it had a sticker on it stating it was fixed and recalibrated. The second didn't work and the third did and still does.

I just received a reply from an email to dnaspeedometers.com in Florida. They fellow says it's unusual that both the speedo and odo went at the same time if it's not the sensor or the wiring (which my local shop says check out k). He says maybe it's the processor which controls both. In that case, fix is $139.

Website looks legit...

So, no one else has dealt with any of the other vendors in the first post?

I have had six or eight transactions with the Benz store. Pretty satisfied.

meltedpanda 12-03-2008 10:56 AM

Ken has always been very good to deal with - The Benz Store

these guys are good: http://www.nhspeedometer.com/

Isn't it cable driven in which that or the drive could be at fault? Isolate the problem with the speedometer before sending it out for repair.

It's electronic and I had a shop test the voltage coming into the cluster and they said it checked out fine so it must be the cluster.

And thanks for the recommendation.

Speedometer Plus

I found "www.speedometerplus.com", located in Los Angeles last summer.

Their service was $90, and was very quick.

But I am glad to hear that there is a good place in Georgia, much closer to home...

fjpish 05-12-2009 06:19 PM

Following up on this old thread, I went with Ken at the Benz Store.

www.benz-store.com.

He's in Georgia and that made UPS ground shipping faster than some of the others. Very nice to deal with, he charged me $125 for what turned out to be a problem on the circuit board and got it back to me in two days. The whole process took less than a week.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

We've used BBA-reman on several occasions, have found them to be honest, dependable, with a pretty good turn around time.

Ken is great, always very helpful

I am glad this thread came up because last week the odometer/trip stopped working on my 300SEL last week. Since I have an erratic fuel gauge. I had been "resetting" the trip odometer like a fool to keep track of my mileage. I have owned three 80s Mercedes and never had a odometer problem, although I knew it was a common deal, so I never used my trip odometers on those cars. I am sure I sped up the failure on my 300SEL by resetting it when I refueled. Its over now and its broken.

Aside from the parts, about how much would an Mercedes shop (not dealer) charge to remove the cluster and replace the gears on a W126? I would think a good shop (we have a couple) would have a good source to buy these, or may have some extra parts onhand.

I guess I could call tomorrow and get a quote, but wondering what people here had paid on average... I am not much of a DIY'er, so not really wanting to do this myself. I also need to get my coolant changed out and a new EHA valve, so it may be a good time to do that as well.

Thanks.

Found a shop in Austin Texas. Fixed the speedometer from my 84 300D for $80 had it ready next day.

I'm getting ready to ship mine to James at MBCluster.com. He is familiar with 124's and it sounds like he has a nice test bench and the experience to check these older units out. I file a progress report once he gets my unit and gives me some feedback.

Good to know. Let us know how it turns out
