Heated outside mirror.
 

My car's driver's side outside mirror is in permanent heat mode. Irrelevant of the outside temperature. The passenger side mirror is acting normally.

Normally the heated mirror function was comming on when the temperrature dipped below about 34F and then turned off automatically after about 20 Minutes or so. But as I said, now the driver's side mirror gets hot even in my garage.

What would cause that? Where is the thermostat for these mirrors?

The car is a 1995 E300D, (same as E320)

The thermostat is in the mirror housing, stuck to the back of the mirror.

Is the thermostat sold as a separate item by Mercedes? Is it easily replaceable?

If not, I suppose that I can get a switch, and control the mirror's heating function that way.

My Toyota had them wired to the rear defroster. I thought that made more sense. Maybe you could just wire it to that circuit.

I believe it is available as an assembly: the mirror glass with the heater laminated and integrated thermostat on a plastic mounting plate. In other words, the mirror glass comes with it (we used to make the EC version).

I suppose that I could wire them to the rear defroster, but that gets too complicated for me. Probably the easiest way, is either to change the thermostat (if possible), or install a small On/Off switch right near the mirror, on the inside of the car.

Actually, now that i know where the thermostat for the mirror is, I am going to blow some hot air from a hair dryer into the mirror assembly. If I am lucky, maybe the heat from the fryer will unstick the thermostat.

I would assume it is solid state but maybe not.

This one might work. Turns on around 40F, turns off around 60F.
