Getting close to buy a E320

This is our first Gas Mercedes and the newest (we own lots of 70 and 80 models that are all diesel ), anyways, its a 1995 E320 with 216K miles, he was selling it for 2,400OBO, but here is a problem, the he said he lost the key for the car and the original owners of that car had lost that original key too and set a new tumbler, and now the owner cant get the key because the vin number is set for the original tumbler...Anyways i got a good mech that can get that problem fixed within budget.... o yeah we are trading our 1996 jeep cherokee for that benz for 1500 so we pay 1k i think its a steal....what do you think.

But the increment for a lower miles car would be such a great investment.

Actros617, have a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a MB-trained tech who knows that vintage MB automobile. There is nothing more expensive than buying a MB automobile for a minimal price that needs major repairs because it has been neglected for years. If you buy the 1995 E320 order a new ignition lock cylinder from a local MB dealer so one key will fit the ignition, the door locks and trunk lock. You may want to have the seller replace the ignition lock cylinder as part of the agreement of sale.

If you can get the ignition lock picked, it is a 5minute job to remove the tumbler, and less than $100 for a new vin-coded cylinder with 1 key from the dealer. If you can't get it picked, the hardened collar will need to be ground away to get to the lock cylinder.

$2500 for a 216,000mile '95 E 320 is not stealing it, I paid less than that for my daughter's with 116,000miles on it. it's probably about right if it doesn't need extensive repairs. If it's pristine with records, you're getting a great deal.

I had a trained mech inspected it and he can repair my lock ignition, the owner bought the ignition he said all he have to do is to R&R, the car is in great condition interior no rips on the seats he also said he sends his car to Mercedes Benz for repairs but i think he is lying B/C he said "HE LOST THE RECORDS" we are going to be the 3rd owner, also he said that if we get the key installed in the car and dont like how it drives i can return it and get 3K back W/O the jeep or 1,200 with the jeep. Anyways see the jeep that we are trading for.

Actros617, the MB dealer that serviced this 1995 E320 will be able to supply a copy of the service record summary to the seller. Request that he provide you that information as a condition of the sale. From your description I get the felling the seller is misrepresenting the facts about this car. Maybe it's just me, but this transaction seems odd ... trading a 1996 Jeep junker plus $1,500 for a reasonably well-maintained 1995 E320.

The miles kill the E 320 from a dealer standpoint. He can't get it financed conventionally, it books low, and only a few people will even be interested unless it is dirt cheap. He likely took it in trade for less than $1000. The Jeep is more of a known commodity to him perhaps, he knows a dealer or person who will buy it. I think that the $$ in the deal sound about right to a good purchase depending on the condition of the '95. Even a perfect '95 with over 200,000miles isn't going to bring much.

The ignition if picked/turned on will pop out with two pins/paperclips/allen-wrenches/etc. poked into the two holes correctly, a 5minute job. If the mechanic can't pick locks, most can't pick these, he will need to grind either the lock ring (carefully to avoid damaging the dash and/or the lock below) or the pins holding the complete assembly (requires removing under-dash covers and dropping the steering column), either one from others who have done so, will cost several hours of labor (even 4hours seems like a low estimate). I would be sure it is done correctly (pick and remove) which should be a locksmith, and the removal sequence of a picked/turned lock is in the DIY, I've done it several times, don't let someone butcher the assembly.
