Question Help with a 190e electro magnetic fan clutch

The engine fan on my 87 16V is not working. Temp sensor is fine and I have power going to the magnet. However, the pulley is showing some pitting (copper showing) where the fan comes into contact and appears worn. The magnet has continuity. What is the symptom of a bad magnet? Can the pulley wear to a point where it is ineffective?

TIA

Tinker

If the gap is too wide, I guess it could get to the point where it would not come on.

I would check the power and ground by fooling the relay by bridging one of the temp sensors.

The easiest way is to bridge the high pressure switch on the drier.

Benzmac,

The temp sensor is working and when grounded provides voltage to the magnet. So......you are saying the gap is too big? How do you adjust it? Or do you replace parts?

DAAAAAAA,

Benzmac, you are absolutely correct! It took a while but my brain kicked in. The gap is to wide because..... I am missing the spacer and dome washer that attaches the fan to the pulley as shown in the manual. I guess it must have been a marginal gap that just grew a bit.

Thanks for kick starting my brain.

Mr. T.
