Need info on mercedes engine swap - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I am a biodieseler and a mechanic, so i am thinking of fitting a mercedes engine in a 1999 kia sportage. I am thinking of a 300sd engine.How is the power on these engines? What engine would you guys use?What kind would you not use? I want something with good power. Any walls i might run into with this swap? Thanks for any info.

You'll want to post this in the diesel forum.

The power/weight ratio of the 617 (pre-'86) 300SD is not great, plus the weight and size in the Kia will not make it a good candidate. The best IMO for this would be the 5-cylinder 602 turbo if it'll fit, or 4-cylinder 601 if the 602 won't fit.

For the size though, I'd be looking at a VW Tdi engine.

A kia has about as much protection as a cardboard box in an accident!

A 617 (300SD) engine weighs about 650lbs....and would probably collapse the entire car to the ground With the transmission it is over 750lbs. The engine in a sportage probably weighs less than half of that.

As babymog said, the best engine candidate would probably be a tdi VW motor.

601 is early 190D 4-cylinder, no turbo, slow. 602 is the 190D 2.5 5-cylinder, significantly more power. 602 turbo more power still, rare in the '87 190D 2.5 turbo, more common in the '90-'93 300D 2.5 Turbo.

so how much hp does the 90-93 300D 2.5 turbo have? what is the weight of these cars?

300D weighs around 3500#, 122hp IIRC.
