1991 4-matic wagon
My 4-matic light was on constantly. Also, if I put it in reverse and turned the wheel completely to the right, the entire car would shake. I took the car to my Mercedes dealer and they want $4,900 for transfer case and hydraulic pump. Should I take the car someplace else and install used parts? Can I just turn off the 4-matic and keep driving safely? The car has 123,000 miles. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

We have a 1990 4-matic, and when our transfer case went out our current, none dealer mechanic said it was a problem in the early design. So my dad contacted Mercedes Benz of North America, and after much dispute got them to pay for a third, the dealer that we bought the car from to pay a third, and then we took the last third. Maybe you can try calling to see if you can work out a deal.
