126 Airbags? To Test or not...
Okay, so like a lot of us in our older 126s, I have been wondering how well the airbag(s) still work(s).
The other day, I was at pick-n-pull and I saw a '90 300SE with the airbag still in it. Part of me wants to bring a battery out there and pop it, just to see if it still works. I guess I really should PAY for it if I plan on doing that, but pick-n-pull is expensive, and shouldn't really be selling expired airbags anyway. What do y'all think? Should I just go do it, and video it? Wouldn't you all like to know if an 18 year old airbag still works? -tp |

How long has it been there?
I kinda want to do it at my PnP, but they will not let me bring a battery in.

I'm not counting on my airbags to deploy in a frontal crash in my W126s.

It's been there for about a month.
As far as popping the airbag, you don't need a car battery. A 9-volt usually will do the trick, two hooked together to give 18 volts will certainly do it. -tp |

Ehh, what the hell?
Do it. I removed the airbag from my 124.

I'd bet they still work. Now if it were from an early 80s model perhaps not?

Yeah, or just put off that flex joint replace another year..... -tp Okay, if it's still there when I go back this weekend, I'm gonna do it! UNLESS - any of you actually want the bag??? Is it even legal to ship one of those? -tp |

It can only be shipped by ground. Regulations don't allow air transport.

... and ground shipping requires a special container.

Answer
Most salvage yard owners will demand you pay, and not allow you to blow them in their yard = liability...
Some areas it is a felony to explode these, unless you are fire/law enforcement. |
