94 w124 E320 crunching noise & Engine shuts off
Hello Every1
I have a 1994 E320 W124(Located in Canada) and i just recently did a head gasket change on it since it was leaking oil. just right after this was done i got the car back and it runs fine when driven slowly or at low revs, but as soon as the gas pedal is stepped on hard or more power is required the engine makes this crunching noise and the car shuts off right away(any rpm above 3000 it happens). So i was under the impression it would be the timing chain tensioner but i got a new one put in and still dint make a difference so i have no idea what else it could be(the wireing harness has been changed already last year). The mechanic i took it to is not a MB master tech he is just a regular mechanic and he says it is most likely the throttle valve actuator which i doubt. So i have attach a small video of the engine i took wit my cell phone dont know if it might help or if it is clear enough. Any advise or help is really appreciated from you masters out there. The video can be downloaded from this link http://rapidshare.com/files/176442438/94_W124_E320.mp4 Thanks for having a look |

If you remove the valve cover & the chain is VERY tight..then most likely the tensioner wasn't installed correctly.
That tensioner MUST be installed 1 piece at a time. 1st the tensioner must be installed & then the closing cap & spring must be installed.

Check to see if the noise is coming from the front of the engine on the intake side? The Cam Adjuster may not be set right giving you the trouble when accelerating.

...and do it right away..you can snap a cam is a second. COMMON mistake, even by Techs... The CT has a locking/ratchet feature on it and each time it is re-installed, it MUST be reset or it will retain it's previously locked length..which can be too tight for the new application. The results of too tight a chain can be an engine disastor..and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks Guys for all the help Just figured out it was the Cam adjuster magnet well that is what i was told by the mech and thanks to "CNC" it might not be replaced properly. Should i just be replacing it with a new one? or is there a particular way it has to be replaced back any advise please and thanks for all the help. |

PITA job if not marked upon disassembly!
It's likely not the maget for the adjuster, but the Adjusting Cam Sprocket itself not being timed properly when reassembled. Your tech needs to go 'back in' and pull the front cover off to reset it. There are also stretch bolts that CANNOT be reused if he's removed them!! Hopefully he has some sort of ALLDATA or something? If not, LMK and I can try to forward you the instructions
