M103 front TDC sensor
I removed the front crank sensor to change the water pump.
I noticed the bracket has slotted holes that allow a few degrees of adjustmenton the sensor, maybe 3-4 crank degrees. Is this critical to final spark timing, or does this sensor just do a rough reference to aid startup? DG |
I believe that sensor is for the tachometer. The crank position sensor is on the back of the block. Maybe someone else can verify this.
|
The front sensor is for the tach, I am quite sure. The computer reads from a sensor at the rear.

Yeah, the top nut should be loosened to remove the sensor and leave the rest of the threaded post on the bracket.
These are usually rusted pretty good and need to be hit with some PB blaster a few times before removal. Sometimes the top nut will not unscrew but the whole post will want to come off which is usually the case. Doh! |
Cam postion sensor at front, crank position sensor at rear.

All the cars crank inputs come from the rear sensor. The one on the front was designed for external testing and plays no part in the operating systems.

Thanks guys. Now if I could just find a way to route the cable back behind the installed new water pump, as it's supposed to go, I'd be in great shape!
(Actually, I was able to unplug the other end and snake it around - I love getting old and dangerous!) DG |
Front TDC sensor
As I was looking at the power steering return hose on my 1990 300e 2.6 , I noticed the other end of this wire from this sensor lying loose on the inner fender. Where is the connector that it should be connected to located?

The wires inside the coax go to pins 7 and 8 and the shield goes to pin 9 on the X11 diagnostic connector. It serves no purpose than to signal cyl 1 TDC for some Bosch disgnostic equipment.
