A little squirt of starting fluid around the intake and vacuum lines in a running engine will tell you if there's a vacuum leak (engine will speed up). Just don't breath too much, and don't let it ignite.

Gotcha I'll give it a try.
-- Do you know which vacuum supplies the feed for the economy gauge? Mine has stopped working since the rebuild and I've checked over all the connections and I can't find anything missing....

On my 95 M104, there were some vacuum connections well hidden underneath the intake manifold. For me they were invisible and only locatable via the Braille method.

Ah found it by pure luck. It is located by the fuses and is yellow. Only reason I saw it was because I saw some leaves down there and as I glanced up I spotted it. Must have gotten pulled out accidentally somehow. Okay everything is functional. This thread is pretty much over.....all my questions will be misfire related which I will answer in my misfire thread.
Thanks everybody...hopefully this thread will help some people who need some visuals for head gasket replacements.

This was my first engine rebuild. Never taken a head off before. I paid about $600 in parts roughly (gasket, skimmed head, new valve guides + seals + head cleaned + water pump). Can't remember exactly off the top of my head. I was quoted by a local MB indy $1200 for the head gasket ALONE. I don't even want to imagine how much it would have cost for head gasket, water pump and complete head rebuild....I would estimate it would have been over $2000. All I can tell you is -- If you are ready for the challenge it is well worth it. Any Indy will not be as meticulous as you can be yourself. I cleaned the whole engine block, replaced any hoses that were suspect, or any part that looked suspect in that matter....cleaned pistons, checked everything over. You won't find many Indy's that will take that approach. When everything is said and done, you KNOW what condition your engine is in and that alone is worth the time and sweat My biggest advice is DETACHING the intake/CIS side at the manifold and leave it alone!!! You don't need all the stress of removing all those electronics + fuel lines etc when you don't have to! You save time + possible problems that could occur on re-assembly. If you have done a water pump before on an M103, you can probably do it yourself. The only couple fiddly parts I found were jiggling the head aside leaving the intake manifold off and the timing chain pin. Other than that, with a Haynes manual, Mercedes FSM and the forum posted in the 1st thread, it was not bad at all.

I had a water pump failure on the freeway at 70 mph and its now head gasket for my 300TE. What repair manual would you recommend?

How did you do this?
What materials/cleaning products did you use?

Just used dremel with cleaning attachment and put some cardboard around piston walls to protect them. As long as you are careful it's fine.

I have read the suggestion that you should use an engine hoist for this job, did you ps2cho?
How much does the cylinder head weigh? |

I thought I might update too that my head gasket is leaking oil down the back of the passenger side of the block. Confirmed it is not the valve cover gasket. What a PITA... I did the head torque correctly to spec and I got the head skimmed. I must have gotten a bad HG. It was a Reinz
...But yes, two guys can pull it together without a hoist. I don't recommend doing it alone, not because it is crazy heavy, but because if you do it by unbolting the intake manifold and leaving it alone, you need an extra pair of hands to slide it out of the guide pin without bending it. Plus you are bending over.

The only part of the HG job that required intense concentration was lowering the head back down. It is VERY easy to gouge or knick the head gasket during that part. I assume you observed the correct order of bolt torquing as well......otherwise I guess you got a bad gasket. I should look and see what I put in my car.

How did you go about cleaning the lower block surface? Did you use anything to polish it? Did you remove the two dowels that help hold the gasket in place? I am concerned that if that surface does not get clean enough it will start to leak again. This is a link to my hg pics.

Doing same job on '88 300 SE. Thanks for the great info on this thread--and the great pics. Anyone out there know of a better head gasket to use? I would hope to get WAY more than 1 1/2 years w/no leaking HG. ps2cho, how extensive is the oil leak. I know you hate that after so much attention to detail and careful work.....
