Transmission fluid for 300E
I pulled the dip stick for the transmission out today the first time since I bought the car and noticed the fluid seems low. There are two lines on the dip stick, and I assume that is the indicator where the fluid level should be. From what I can tell, my fluid level is below the line at the bottom of the stick and I think I need transmission fluid. Is my assumption correct? If I need transmission fluid, what grade should I be using? And can I mix what is already in there, being not knowing what kind is currently in the car. Or should I take it to a shop and have it done? If I can just add fluid, where do I put the transmission fluid in, right down the same tube where the dip stick is? Any help is appreciated.

Agh, this has been discussed many times, and very thorough recently. Do a search and you'll find all the info you need.
Except for electronic trans (722.6), you should use Dextron III. Check trans fluid with car fully warmed (20 min drive) and with engine runing; the warmer fluid will give you an accurate reading. You don't want to overfill it!

now you caught me off gaurd but I think that dextron fluid is the type that you should use I forgot hopefully somebody will jump in here and correct me if I am wrong. Now the one thing that I can say for sure with out any hesitation what so ever is where you will add the fluid is yep you guessed right ,in the dipstick hole and when you add fluid add just a little at a time when the tranny is warmed up .And most importantly do not overfill it .sorry I cant be of more help on the fluid type Its just that I cant remember for sure and I dont wat to give you wrong info.

replacing w/ premium synthetic fluid seems to be the MB Hot Rodders consensus
if the fluid and filter has not been serviced periodically and/or records are not available for that service, might as well go ahead and do it or have it done (naturally your choice on syn or dino) -fad |

How did you check the fluid, engine cold and off, at operating temp and in gear, or some other method?
If you checked it cold, then the fluid should be about 10mm below the lower line if full. At operating temp, in gear and parking brake on, it should be at the upper line. And if you need to add, Dextron III will be fine. Just be sure not to overfill.
