New Head bolts -- Do I need washer??

New Bolt on the right. It looks like it has a built in washer...

Do I still need the washer??

The new bolt has a built in shoulder/washer. Make sure you oil the flat part.

FYI

Note, the instructions that came with my head gasket set states if the head bolt has been installed with a washer, NEVER oil the washer surface that makes contact with the cylinder head. Lightly lubricate the thread and bolt seal.

That makes no sense. In most applications oiling is avoided to maintain torque values. This design is torque to yield where the bolts are torqued to an angular value. Lubrication would actually be preferred to make the job easier.

I read the shop CD and it states to oil the bolts.

I also found in it about this bolt. It seems after November of 1988 they updated the head bolts to the one I have now. It does NOT require a washer.

There were no instructions. I bought them off ********arizona. Just came in a ziplock bag.

Yes, definitely oil the "washer' portion of the bolt, and the threads. If you do not, you WILL gall the head as you tighten down the bolts. This will result in very uneven torque as you tighten the bolts. Ask me how I know.
I have the '91 103 engine manual, and it says oil them.
Believe me, with 50 ft/lbs, then two additional 1/4 turns on the bolts, you want all the friction reduction you can get.

I know I am new here but have turned a wrench for a number of years. I have seen this same question come up on about every kind of engine and the answer always varies according to the manufacturer. If I cannot find specific information and also as a force of habit, if I am installing the old head bolts oiled or not I always clean the bolts on the wire brush on my grinder and when possible I run a tap in the bolt hole to clean it out. Hey, it works for me!
