'Can you get it to run long enough to put a multi-meter on the Battery terminals
to check and see if you're getting 13 to 14.5 volts with the engine On?

If not ,you'll have to take it off (AND back).

First suspect is a blown fuse on top of the OVP relay.

I have around 13,5V on my generator ,but it seems inadequate to cope with the blower.headlights and wipers running ,soon the battery starts to go down .the ABS light coming on , a higher capacity generator?

The OVP was fine and I ran the car without the neg lead and it still ran so I have an issue with the belt tension how do you tighten it

You are on the right track. Ensure you have the alternator belt tight and are charging 14 volts or so. Also, have a good battery, not marginal, fully charged. On my 88 300E, with a marginal battery, it would start and run if I held the gas for 2000 rpm or so. The ABS light would be on and it would die if I let off the gas. After a period of time it would "click in" with an rpm jump and extinguish the ABS light (OVP relay action ?), and it would be good to go and not die. A new, hot battery and frequent use avoided the condition.
