M119 oil guide replacement.
 

Drivers side, I can't get the valve cover off because these hoses are in the way. Looks like the fuel rail. Can I disconnect it or is it under pressure? The engine is cold and the car hasn't been driven since last night.

Also these plastic connectors broke and the small one goes under the intake. That'll be a PITA to change.

I disconnected the fuel line, there wasn't any pressure.

I started this job because I was getting a ticking from under the valve cover. Oil guides are common on this engine with 170,xxx miles. I'm surprised that none of the guides have broken tabs. I thought I'd find at least one.

The only thing that does seem strange is that the guides are a little loose. I thought they'd be tight. Anybody know how they're supposed to be?

I'll keep posting follow-ups as I go along.

The oil guides themselves sell for $16.00 each, X8 per side, you do the math, it's expensive. I found out the O rings can be replaced if you guide isn't broken, for about $1 each, 2 per guide is about $16.00. Much better.

Now the other issue. Fifteen years of hot engine makes for brittle rubber hoses. All the breather hoses and connections broke when I was trying to remove them. There goes the savings on the oil guides. The local dealer has all the hoses and connectors (in stock) for about $135, but I ordered them from my import parts guys. Not sure of the price yet.

One more thing so far....after you disconnect the fuel line from the rail to remove the valve cover, put it back on and tighten it. I left mine off, and elevated, but fuel was still dribbling out. Luckily everything won't go back until tomorrow so all the fuel can evaporate.

Well it's all buttoned up and running again. It seems like a new car, but it always does after I fix something pretty major.

All the rubber hoses and connections ended up being about $135.00. Add to that the valve cover gasket, $35, crush washers, $10, oil guide O rings, $16 and chain guide, $30, and the total was about $230.

The mechanic wanted $600 so I did pretty well, but I only did one side. Now the passenger side will only cost about $75 because I replaced the rubber vent hoses. Even though it's not ticking on the passenger side, I may go in just to replace the chain guide, which crumbled in my hand when I touched it on the drivers side.

I am in the process of changing the injector o-rings and cups.
The vacuum hoses also broke (old and hard), I will just replace them with "off the shelve" hoses from autozone.
