which sealant for timing cover gasket m103
 

i did some searching before posting this, but now I am all confused which sealant to use for the timing cover gasket job.

first I found posts to use loctite 5900, but then I started finding information to use loctite 5910 and 5970. what are the differences between these 3 sealants? i'm sure either of them work, but I am wondering what the difference between the three are and which is easier to work with.

addition q: so if I've done my homework right, I only need to apply the sealant on the ends of the rubber u-shape gasket where it meets the cylinder head, on the bottom part in the corner of the cylinder head, and on the back of the timing cover where it meets the cylinder head?

i applied too much in my previous attempt by putting the black permatex stuff in the grooves and everywhere on the cover. :|

I just did head gasket...
 

I could not find the LOCTITE anywhere in town. I ended it purchasing the MB brand on line.

I used blue Permatex Hylomar on my M103 timing cover last year and was very impressed. It was hard to find but well worth it. It was developed for jet engine assembly and racers use it. Never dries or hardens. No leaks. Highly recommended.

i just ended up ordering a tube of 003 989 98 20 10 for around $20, thanks anyways :)

WHERE did you find it?

You may find it online by searching permatex hylomar but I must have gone to a dozen local
parts jobbers until I found ONE on the shelf. Worth the hunt.

Here in Massachusetts

What you buy from Mercedes is the same as the Loctite 5900. Used it last year and it has held tight so far. Was $12.50 a tube at my dealer at the time. Probably more now.

The MB dealer in Richmond is also the Toyota dealer. When I went to purchase the MB sealant, I was told that the Toyota sealant was just as good at 1/2 the cost. I used it and never had a problem.

Mine started leaking again. Maybe the MB stuff is the answer.

use the Orange mercedes stuff, we don't use any other sealant but that one for the timing cover
