How do I adjust idle? 1989 300E

Trying to pass smog and the last thing to over come (famous last words) is to adjust the idle with no surging.

How Do I adjust the idle--it is too low now.

There is a small hole in the air filter housing into which an appropriately sized allen wrench is placed. You don't have to remove the housing. The allen wrench is placed upon the fitting and pushed down and turned with the engine running. This will either enrich or lean out the air/fuel mixture. You want it as lean as possible. Too lean and it will stall. Too rich and it will not pass emissions. I have found the use of "Guaranteed to Pass" helpful.

The idle control valve has an adjustment screw. Most likely is not longer possible to turn it, I drilled my one out and replaced it with a new one

If your idle is too low, it is not an adjustment - it requires a repair or maintenance. Do a search here - there is a wealth of info on this issue.

you cannot adjust the idle on a 300e...the beauty and the beast of it. it either works or it doesn't....just gonna have to fix things to get it right. the neat thing is, i think, is that the car won't run right unless you can pass emissions and you will know it before the test. i think emissions testing does a favor (for free) for those who drive automobiles that need repair. free diagnostics..that's $100 in savings...you take the failure notice to a mechanic and they will do that to fix it and only that, give you a reciept for this work and you take it back to the testing facility and have it pass. you just got a cheap repair, the repair shops know that they will be called on the carpet if there is something fishy going on ......thank you EPA

No emissions or vehicle inspections here in MI. We can drive whatever we want, with all the smog and soot blasting out of it we please!
