86 420 SEL Starting problems
 

After a 300 miles trip I parked the car in the driveway. The next day it would turn over but not start! I had a couple of mechanics look at it and got various suggestion as to what the problem was. Changed the fuel pumps, fuel pump relay, fuel distribution system, idle air pump. still the same results. If I crack the big throttle a little bit, the engine will start, however any depression of the accelerator and the engine will die. If I force feed it with the throttle linkage it will run at the higher rpm but will just die when I stop feeding the throttle. At this point I don't know where else to look!! HELP!!

Temperature sensor issues? The computer might not be adjusting the idle control properly for the temp it "thinks" it is....I'd probably seek dealer help....they could probably diagnose the issue pretty fast.

Did you check/replace the OVP relay? ABS light on? That can be a starting/idling cause.

Smells like a bad fuel relay but not 100% sure.

I would check the ignition coil as well.

What is a "OVP"? and where is it located?

What did you replace? If you replaced a fuel distributor you need to adjust the mixture. The adjustment screw is behind the sensor plate forward of the octopus looking gaggle of steel fuel lines. Turn it in to add fuel. Back it out to take away fuel. Turn it with a 3mm allen wrench in small increments of 30-40 degrees untill the thing will at least idle. Good luck

OVP = overvoltage protection relay. Located on the firewall, along with numerous other relays (maybe under a plastic cover). It has a fuse mounted on top of it.

This sounds like another "Ethanol Related Incident". Mechanics are seeing more and more ERI's. Spoke with eight yesterday here in the St Petersburg Florida area, all are telling the same stories. They are rebuilding carbs, replacing pumps and working overtime.
