Later Idle Control Valve in earlier W126. Will it work? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

My friend has a new Idle Control Valve he bought for his 1989 420 SEL. Before he could replace it the car was totaled. Does anyone know if this part will work in my 1983 380 SEL?

The one I have on my car is near the end of its useful like. When I clean and lub it, it will be great for a week or so, then the idle starts to increase again.

I have my fingers crossed as he offered it to me for free, but I'm afaid to just try it for fear it will mess something up if it's not compatible.

I'd say to check the resistance of the coil, and if it's the same, or very close, give it a try.

For that matter, look it up on one of the parts searches. It might be a direct replacement for your part.

The part number for the 81-85 cars is different than for the 86-91. If it's just a matter of resistance, I can check that when the part comes over next week. I was more concerned about the inner workings of the valve.

Is there any risk in trying it if the resistance is about the same?

I think that the size of the end fittings may be different, I have a spare for my 86 and a spare for my 85 and they are different.

no it will not work,the valves for the 86-91 cars were much cheaper than the 81-85 and you can bet they would have been already used if they would work.

Thanks, that's what I figured, but hope springs eternal. Looks like I'll ordering a new ICV today.
