upper camshaft cover leaking
 

My indie tells me that the valve cover gasket has to replaced as well. I have a leak coming from the upper valve/cam area. Do I need to replace the valve cover gasket as well. He plans on doing this whole job for $382. It seems it should be much more if he in fact is replace the VC gasket. From what I have read it should just be the U-shape gasket and some sealant.......

Blowing smoke? Is this a DIY? Any special tools required?

Another update, it is actually called the timing chain case gasket. That is the part that is leaking. :cool:

jumping on the bandwagon for this one. i dont mean to threadjack, but this is on topic

how are you guys installing the camshaft seal? last time i put it in, i messed it up and the inside lip folded outwards. is there any easy way to do this? I know there is a factory tool for it, but is there another one available to get?

Not sure if you have a 103 engine, but i do... and i did that repair for under $30 myself (gasket, cam seal and sealant). I followed the wiki article http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/M103TimingCoverReseal It took me a couple of hours being really careful and deliberate.

Thanks Jamie for the info. I think I am going to be doing this in-house!!! By the way it should be the same for a M104 engine, yes???

I am afraid I know nothing about the 104 engine. My limited knowledge of the 103 comes out of necessity since I own one.

I hope someone with M104 experience can chime in.

I have the sweating type oil leak in this area. I can see the same "U" shaped gasket (green colored for the M104) not fully seated and slightly tucked under from an improper installation, most likely from when I had the head gasket replaced several years ago.

If it is like the M103 install, I think I can handle it!

Check your email..M104 a bit more complex then the M103.

RBYCC has it right. Same job but more complicated. Be certain to use the correct type of sealant. You can buy a tube of it from Mercedes. DO NOT use regular, off-the-shelf sealants. They will leak again, maybe right away! Mine (M103) has been re-sealed for about 10K miles and is still dry at this time.
