300E leaking oil

I'm looking to buy a 300E. Two choices are '86 101k leaks oil $4500 the other is '87 with 201k for $3700 and also appears to be leaking some oil though not as bad as the '86. The '87 seller will split repair costs based on a MB check out.

Which is the better option if any and is the oil issue a common problem on the 300E. What kind of life can you get from a gas engine.

Thanks!

First off, where does the oil seem to be leaking from? If it's near the front of the motor it may be the timing cover, which I believe is fairly common. If your willing to live with it it's not a major issue
in my opinion.

The leaking on the '86 was definately coming down the front. The concern was the amount. The '87 was typical older leak gummy look. The owner was saying about a quart every third fill up. My guess was if the '87 split a head job I'd be in good shape for the same price as the '86. Still the extra 100k is the unknown. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Well...personally I'd go with the 87' then, even though it is higher mileage. a: The price is right. b: a gummy area is always better than a nice clean oil leak (less leakage volume/rate) c: back to the original idea of if your willing to live with it or fix it. So with that in mind.....the 87' sounds like the one...assuming the rest of the car is good, and your only concerned with the oil issues.

The rest of the car looks great, but getting it checked out tomorrow for any other hidden things... Engine and Tranny are the big concerns all else is easy.
