91' 190 2.6 Trans problem!!

So I bit the bullet and bought a pristine condition black 91' 190E 2.6 auto from single owner. knowing it has a trans problem, I bought it becuase of all the other maintenance has been done and updated: i.e head gasket, head job, radiator, brakes, blower, etc. reciepts in hand. What he told me was he came to a red light and when he went to accelerate, the car would not come out of 1st (2nd). The car still has reverse and 1st gear operation but nothing else. He pointed me in the way of a governor in or on the transmission. Has anyone heard of this and is there anywhere else to go before I hunt down a replacement trans???

That trans has plastic governor gears & they do break.

Replacement takes about 4 hrs.

Call your local MB dealer, I have found their prices to be quite reasonable at times.

will do.....

You will need to remove the rear cover on the trans. Requires a 27MM 12 point deep socket.

Also removal of the governor requires a pair of LONG right angle snap ring pliers.

Most likely you will find a spring lodged in the rear pump that caused the gears to break.

Could this be a In-car process our do I have to actually drop the transmission?

We always do that in car....
