Transmission ID

My 300 CE has, according to the owner's card print-out I got from the Classic Center, transmission number: 722.320 03 061361.

According to Stu Ritter's book, my car came with transmission model: 722.358.

Are those two bits of information consistent with one another?

Next question, can an M103 be mated to a 722.365 transmission (500E tranny)?

Plug your VIN into the link below and see what matches.

The exact same transmission ID/serial number comes out, of course. It just seems odd to me that a transmission that is model 722.258 has a serial number that begins with 722.320. I am at the same time unsure that the beginning number on the serial number should be the same as the model number. I am hoping somebody here might be able to offer an explanation for that seeming disconnect.

Generally speaking, the 124.050 models had both transmissions depending on year.

The 1986-88 300CE had transmission 722.320 (up to transmission #3106163) which includes your car based on the info provided.

The 1989 300CE had transmission 722.358 (from transmission #3106164)

1990-92 (124.051) had transmission 722.359
1993-95 (124.052) had transmission 722.369

I would doubt the transmission swap (M103/500E) suggested could even be possible.

That is interesting. You'd think the owner's card info would have the right tranny, so you must be right. Where did you get that information? The Stu Ritter book doesn't even list a 722.320 as a 124 transmission for any model!

I used two resources for this information.

1. MB Technical Data for Passenger Cars book
2. Researched the MB Electronic Parts Catalog

Not to offend Stu Ritter, he just did not research deep enough. To get the correct info I use official MB provided documentation.
