My 1987 560 SEL would not start this morning. Seems to be plenty of electric power but could not get the starter to turn over. No sounds at all coming from under the hood. Is there anything I can check before having the car towed to the shop?

When you turn the key to the on position, before cranking the starter, do you hear the fuel pumps cycle? It's a hissing sound from the rear of the car that last about 3 seconds.

you should run the gear selector back and forth try starting it in nuetruel{SP} anyways it could be your saftey switch is out of adjustment .Let us know .

Try holding the shifter up in park when you hit the key. If it starts then, or if it starts in neutral, chances are that the shifter linkage bushings are shot. There are two or three bushings and they cost less than $1 apeice. Remember that if the starter doesn't catch on the first try you have to turn the key all the way off before trying again.

We did get the starter to start in the afternoon after the car was in the sun for awhile. Same think happened this morning. Can the neutral safety switc be marginal an temperatur sensitive? How do I replace the bushings?
