The car is in great overall physical shape.
It's very common on forums. You have to sift through the crap posts to get to the good stuff. To me there is value in keeping a car you've had for awhile too. There is something to this "bonding" thing.
The gentleman with the wagon knows that his is just reliable safe transportation so his decisions are based more on safety and economics. Nothing wrong with that approach either.....

Still flawed logic. 104 motors don't need valve jobs - ever, likely. You're probably thinking of a 103 motor. You'd just be throwing money away and potentially introducing problems. See the 5th paragraph under "Problems Leaks" here -
