I have a 1996 C-280. The keyless entry works only when I am VERY close AND pointing it directly at the rear view mirror. I have changed the batteries with no improvement. Any suggestions, or is this normal??

Your keyless entry system seems to be working fine as this is what it should be and not a very long distance.You do not want it to operate at longer range then this.If it were a remote starter then it would be a different story as that would require a long distance to operate.
Normally factory OEM systems are limited in range.Hope this helps.You could try placing the remote under your chin and pressing the button while it is there as believe it or not it will increase the distance of operation as your head becomes an antenna.
