Last time I had that problem it was the fuel pumps/filter/accumulator set up with loose connections allowing a slight leak.

What car is it? Does it smell inside the car or only under the hood? Does it only smell with the car running or all the time?

Year, model, etc would help.
Without this information I can tell you to check the following.

Rubber fuel lines -- check with the car running as they could have a pinhole.
Idle control valve
Charcoal canister
Fuel injector lines

If the car has a carburetor
Check the base for leaks as well as the float reservoir
Check the intake manifold for leaks.

Good luck

Gas Smell

I have a 88 420.. and the gas cap gasket is / was the culprit. The gaskets don't seem to last too long because everytime you put gas in it twists and wears. Because of the pressure generated, when you stop it 'leaks' through the gasket and the smell gets into the trunk and then into the passenger cabin. I just buy a new gas cap from a local parts store for a couple of bucks and problem solved. I keep one in the glove box, so when the gasket goes, I just replace it .
