Oil level

I have an 87 560 SL, changed the oil and put 8.5 qts in just like the owners manual said, and I can't get a reading on the dip stick. When I change the oil on my C-Class, and E-Class and fill to owner's manual spec's the oil level is right where it should be. I'm afraid to add more and I am afraid to drive it. Oil gauge pins to the top a moment after start up

I can't imagine it needs more than 8.5 quarts....thats over 2 gallons!

There is nothing on the stick? Checked with the engine off on level ground...the stick is dry? Seems strange....

oil level

If you put 8.5 qts of oil in and it is not on your garage floor, you have more than enough. 8.5 qts is the TOTAL capacity. An oil change is more like 7.5 qts. These cars like to run with the oil halfway down the dipstick. To quote the dealer shop info "customers should be discouraged from topping up the oil".

Look more closely at your dipstick. You may find the oil is somewhat overfilled. Fresh clean oil is hard to see.

If you're sure you've got the right dip stick and that it's showing no reading all you can do is add more until you get a reading. MB recommends that the oil level be about midway between the min and the max.

I'd check very closely on the stick and make sure that the oil isn't way too high/too clear to see on the stick.
