Finally found my A/C leak -- the SIGHT GLASS!
1994 C280
Been dealing with this for about 7 months. I've looked and looked for the leak to no avail. Today, I'm actually looking for another leak on the front of the engine behind the driver head light and had just had the car running. I noticed some "oil spray" and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Just then, I notice greenish oil bubbling out of the sight glass. Frankly, I had noticed a crack 3-4 years ago but figured it wasn't hurting anything. So, there's my leak. Unfortunately, it is a one piece unit with the receiver/dryer. I can charge the system. Question is, how do I "empty" the system to replace the receive/dryer. Secondly, don't I have to "pull a vacuum" before I'd recharge it? Can I/ How do I do that? 134a system.

There is only one legal way to remove the refrigerant, and that is to recover it into a cylinder. You're supposed to recover to a 4" vacuum or more.
Yes you do have to pull a vacuum on the system before you charge it with refrigerant. You get a vacuum pump. I've heard that some Auto Zone stores lend them out, but I bought one for about $200. You will also need to add oil to the new dryer before you install it. And don't uncap the new dryer until you are ready to add oil, bolt it into the system and pull a vacuum right away. |
