Dave, Not often I can correct a guy with your experience, but this is one of those times. In fact, the motor in the 260E is the 103.940. Small point as regards the EGR issue, because neither the 103.940 nor the 103.983 had the EGR in MY1988.

GAAAAA, you are correct, of course! I missed in your first post that the vehicle in question was a 260E. I so seldom hear about the baby M103, I almost forget it exists, and when I see "M103", I have a bad habit of assuming "300E". D'oh - sorry about that. I wonder in what month/year EGR was phased in. It's hard to translate engine numbers into a date.
