Old Coils and EZL Failure, Any Relation?
I stumbled on
Quote:
I ask since I have a qualifying vehicle ('94 E420) and a pair of coils that I *thought* I needed to replace. If it's just paranoia I will be putting the coils up on ebay. |
What's a "qualifying vehicle"? E420 ignition control modules are not prone to failure.

any white areas on the old coils next to the brackets? that's where they leak voltage to the outside. and that requires mores amperage from the coil and the ezl units. what wears out coils is worn plugs with lotsa gap, tired caps, rotors and wires. any extra gap in those parts means more effort-amperage-required from the parts upstream. good luck, chuck.

My 0.02, its a question of risk - I'm certain that a coil with a short can take out an EZL. So, if it's not too expensive (in the case of my 560SL, $90 vs thousands), I'd replace the coil(s) preventatively.
Of course, THEN you run the risk of DOA and "infant mortality", and the problem of "they don't make them the way they used to". Keep in mind that supposedly, some EZL's on 300E's were constructed out of unobtanium and can't be had new at any price, or there is a long lead time. I worry that this will get worse. |
This is why EZL's need to be replaced with FORD EDIS proccessors and coil pack. Megajolt can be used to drive the processor and a trigger wheel is also needed.
